Obedience & Agility Training

Can anyone recommend a good obedience & agility training classes? Heard abt MKA's but dun know how good they are. Quite cheap though...

Myself tried MKA obedient class before and I am truly enjoy it, they have good experiences trainers in OB, but the location now is serdang so you may need to consider that.

Agility so far only puppy.com and petnyou offer proper class, I never try puppycom before so anyone of you tried may be can share the thoughts. Petnyou got experiences volunteer helper - fawn, you can really learnt the running technic.. many tips and most important you can run your dog offleash on grass. That is the real fun for agility..

My personal view : Would be a bonus if your dog have basic obedient before join in agility. Good recall is a must in agility, I think most important owners must make sure they truly enjoy the sport, because it definately takes time to see the result. I would like to add in too : different dogs hv different talents, besides agility and obedient there are many dog sports like dock jump, flyball, dancing, search and rescue..etc. so, don't give up if you see your dog very slow in certain sport, may be he will be a pro in another sport. Just spent more time trying different sports, and find one sport that truly suit our cocker and our ownself. We know our dogs the best!

PetnYou Dog Sports & Social Saturday sessions

Dog lovers who lament over the dearth of facilities available in this country for K9s to play in or exercise or just plain socialize can now look forward to the PetnYou Dog Sports & Social Saturday sessions at Subang Jaya.

Background
It started out as a casual Saturday gathering for trainers and several other agility enthusiasts, having a go at the obstacles with our dogs. We have gotten more adventurous since and are now attempting flyball runs on the side and learning some nifty dog tricks as well. This may eventually lead to heelwork to music routines pretty soon, we figure.

Nasi lemak and teh ais sessions aside, we had such an enjoyable time that we thought it would only be logical to open the doors to similar dog lovers who are seeking a suitable outlet for their dogs to work out and have fun in, hence the Social Saturday sessions.

Prior to opening up the Saturday sessions, the field and warehouse rental costs were shared equally amongst all participants, including the trainers alike. And we shall continue with this practice whereby all participants will contribute equally for all sessions.

Where and when
Play time is from 8 – 10 am, every Saturday morning at Sri Sedaya School field, Jalan SS13/4 in Subang Jaya. The location is convenient and comprise of a proper enclosed private school field which is spacious, clean, secure and conducive for dog sports and activities. How much
Playground fees are RM40 per month which works out to RM10 per 2 hour session. Any number of dogs allowed as long as owner can demonstrate control. If you can control more then 2 dogs at a time, you should consider taking up a dog trainer’s position … seriously.

Objective and benefits
Idea is to provide a casual and enjoyable venue for dog lovers and their dogs to gather at during the weekends. Also designed to promote dog sports and activities for both dog and owner to partake in. PetnYou’s agility obstacles will be available for use at all sessions. Use of flyball equipment comes courtesy of Shirley, a true blue dog sports fan. Tips on various dog sports covering agility, OB, flyball, frisbee, tricks and heelwork to music will be handed out on a voluntary basis and you just need to ask.

Being a properly fenced school field, the venue is safe and spacious for running your dog. Off leash runs are possible if your dog is controllable and not aggressive. Agility and flyball runs are conducted on grass, which is more conducive and always the preferred surface. This is especially so for the jumping disciplines as prolonged training on cement or any hard surface can be detrimental to the dog.

House rules
1. Dog should be non-aggressive and controllable.
2. Dog should be fairly reliable off leash and have a decent recall.
3. Dog and owner should preferably have some knowledge of basic OB training.
4. Dog should be under constant supervision and on leash, except whilst taking part in dog sports or activities or play sessions.
5. Puppies (fully vaccinated) are welcomed and will only have to pass the 1st criteria.

Hi Nina, I'm an agility fan n assist PetnYou in their agility training in Subang. How old is ur dog n hs he/she gone thru some basic OB? For agility, dog will need to be fairly fit n active n hv some basic OB skills particularly stay n recall. If ur dog likes running n follows u fairly close, den agility is an enjoyable option.

MKA is still waiting for a full set of agility equipment, so only 2 schools offering proper agility as mentioned by Shirley. Hv bn to both schools n will gv u d pros n cons thru pm.

Not being biased, but d only 3 dogs who managed to secure top placing at d June 06 novice agility trials at BU park all came from d Subang school. Angel - Border Collie, Groovy - JRT n Russell - ECS (dats d bloke in Admin's avatar).

Tq so much for all comments from everyone. It didn't come into my mind I'd to train my dog until I found so many doggie fans out there talking abt it. I'd thought that obedience was just the ordinary training which could be done at home and didn't know what 'agility' meant until I went to some puppycom's gathering.

However, like you've all said, my doggie can only go for agility training only when she's obedienced trained. I realy don't know to what level of obedience she'd to be trained before she could join the agility class, as the level of obedience in her can be a very subjective matter. I train her at home & she can sit, stay, lie down, roll over, won't go out of the gate when our gate is opened, won't steal food & won't pee indoors or go beserk when being pampered. Is that sufficient to enrol her into agility??? She's now slightly over 2.5 yrs old. Perhaps if her obedience level is too low, would she be too old to be trained? How & where shld I test her?

Aiyo, after so much hv been said, I do feel a very irresponsible for getting her before exploring trainings for her. Didn't know so many doggie trainings were available until now. Did try contacting indiv dog trainers earlier, but their fees were exorbitently high! As for MKA, their timings had always clashed with my son's activity.

d most important is ofcoz he had offleash reliability...

try bringing him out n observe how he behave offleash.....

if he will ignore distraction n follow ur direction/command, then is good enuf.

As mentioned by Amanda, u only require basic OB for agility ie. stay n come. More importantly is dog shld b reasonably fit n healthy, active n playful wld b a bonus.

OB training cn b done on ur own if u r disciplined enuf. D advantage of proper classes is dat training is conducted with distractions ie. other dogs present. Also helps to socialise ur dog. Wat u've taught her so far is pretty good. Does she obey u in d presence of other dogs?

How is her recall? If its fairly reliable, den agility is a real option. For a start, agility is always conducted on leash. Depending on d dog n handler, some take longer to move on to off leash runs n some r fine just doing it on leash for d fun of it. Off leash runs is ven d fun really starts.

2.5 yo is suitable for agility as most dogs only start after 1yo.

Generally, a dog wld b well suited for d sport if
- dog enjoys running bside u n after u
- dog can focus on u eg. whilst perfoming tricks
- dog is reasonably active n playful

Opps! when she's off leash, surely she'll go sniffing here & there (cocker natural instinct). Definitely need to call her a few rounds before she'll respond to me. Dunno how if there are so many doggies around. Could be worst! Looks like agility is not for her at the moment.

is normal for ur dog to react that way...my dogs is like tat oso...
juz bring her out more often n she'll eventually lost interest to d surrounding... juz like my dog, during her 1st few jungle trekking trip, she get so excited n dash/jump all around...now after months of weekly trekking, she finally manage to calm herself n come when i call her...

1st of all...never expect her 2 respond when she's busy....gv her some freedom to check out d place n settle down....

mayb after a few trip 2 d same place....she'll not b tat excited....then its time u catch her attention like showing her d toy or her favourite treats...n ask her 2 do some simple command...

I mean you can try on any training sch. Not really only petnu, but i hv more info on this sch. Perhaps you can drop by tomorrow morning with her on 8am just try out, it shouldn't have any charges for you to check it out, basically they only trying to ask all doggie lovers to share cost on renting the field n the store room for the equipments it will be roughly 10 ringgit per session.
If you want to register her to official obedient course may be you can call some of the training sch I list earlier on to check out the cost.
